Q: If we are a Philadelphia Gay Bowling League, why do we meet in NJ?

A: Good question!! The PGBL (Philadelphia Gay Bowling League) used to bowl at Oregon Lanes in south Philly (now the location of Ballys Fitness) for MANY years. When the bowling lanes closed that year, we had to relocate and choose the Westbrook Lanes location. Westbrook Lanes is a quick ride over the Walt Whitman Bridge (10 mins). Besides, at the time, no other lanes were available in Philadelphia "proper".

Q: Who bowls in our league?

A: Anyone is welcome to bowl in our Gay/Lesbian league. Teams consist of men and women in any combination. However, 3 bowlers on each team must be gay/lesbian.

Q: Do I have to be a good bowler to join PGBL?

A: NO, absolutely not! Our members are of all different bowling abilities. Yes, some bowl very well, while others....lets say, come for fun, which is encouraged by our organization! We use handicap scoring (see score FAQ).

Q: What is your league named the PGBL Cookie Cappelli Memorial League?

A: PGBL stands for Philadelphia Gay Bowling League and is named that because our league started in Philadelphia many years ago. We are the areas longest running gay/lesbian bowling league. Cookie Cappelli was an outstanding member and officer of this organization for many years (from the beginning). When he passed away, the officers and members of the PGBL officially changed the name of the league from just PGBL to PGBL Cookie Cappelli Memorial League as tribute to Cookie.

    2). Thanksgiving "turkey shoot"
    3). December Holiday party
4). Year end awards banquet with food, music and other fun
5). Weekly "bowlo" (a combination of Bingo and Bowling) for a small fee

We also raise money for organzations determined by our seasons Charity committee. Also, the Westbrook lanes has a bar and food services!

Q: Do you keep score or just bowl for fun?

A: BOTH! We do keep offical scores throughout the season. We use handicap scoring so that all ability bowlers can possibly benefit from prizes at season end! Of course, all nights of bowling are fun! We do not have competitive personalities!

Q: Do you award teams/bowlers with prizes for scores?

A: YES! We have a year end awards banquet with food, music and AWARDS. Each season a prize committee comprises a prize fund for season end. The prize fund has a broad range of both individual awards and team awards.
